All throughout Milan, usually in or around parks, there are green fountains with water continually flowing from them:
After a bit of research, we have learned that the water is potable and that it flows at a constant trickle to prevent bacterial growth in the pipes. This constant drip led to the name of the fountains, vedovelle -meaning young widows, resembling the endless tears of a widow. The unused water from the fountains is recycled and used by farms for irrigation.
We have found these fountains very useful for washing our hands after petting dogs, cleaning fresh fruit from a market, and for refilling our water bottles!
