Human Right's Day

Monday was a holiday, here, in Cape Town called Human Rights Day. It commemorates a day in 1960 when police opened fire on a crowd of Africans who were protesting the law requiring them to carry passes. Passes were documents that Africans were required to carry on them to ‘prove’ that they were allowed to enter a ‘white area’. It wasn’t until after apartheid was abolished that it became a national holiday.

We celebrated the day by hiking Devil’s Peak (another one of Cape Town’s many mountains) with some friends. The mountain is directly next to the infamous Table Mountain and reaches 1,001 meters high.
The hike took about an hour and a half up and along the way we saw some pretty cool stuff! We found a protea, which is South Africa's national flower:
Todd felt the need to pretend to be a climber while Kristina got artsy taking the picture:
At the top, we were rewarded with 360 degree views of our adopted city, the Cape of Good Hope, the Atlantic seaboard, and the Stellenbosch wine region.
