NYC Lessons Learned

My mom just had her 50th birthday and I was lucky enough to get to spend it with her, my sister, and my cousin in Lake Tahoe.  We celebrated her day by going to a Rascal Flatts concert at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harvey's.  The concert was amazing and it was even more amazing to get to spend the day with my mom!  After a great weekend in Lake Tahoe with my family, I am back in the city living like a New Yorker.

Today, we went to the taping of the Late Show with David Letterman! We got to watch him interview Steve Carell and listened to Sheryl Crow sing. As long as you don't mind waiting in lines to wait in other lines for hours, it's worth it.  Just a tip, don't let them seat you right in the center of the audience... the camera man and photographer will basically block most of what you want to see.  So, sit on one of the sides, or in the balcony.  And, be prepared to be super peppy for an hour, "Dave likes it".  We also stopped across the street  from the Ed Sullivan Theater and I had my first black and white cookie!  It looked to me like it would be a crunchy sugar cookie type, but I was way off!  It was soft almost like a cake with soft, very tasty chocolate and vanilla topping.  Basically, they are heaven.

At this point, Todd and I have only lived in NYC for a short time however we have both learned a few things about the city that are definitely worth mentioning.  It seems that officers who direct traffic on the street blow their whistles for no reason at all.  Times Square should be avoided at ALL costs.  Odd numbered streets go east to west and even streets go west to east.  Avenues go north and south.  If you don't have a hatred for cab drivers before you live here, you will the second you ride your bike down any avenue.  Once you eat at a restaurant- even if it is DELICIOUS, you really don't need to go back because there are so many restaurants worth trying!  Regular strength bike locks need not apply... super strength bike locks are very necessary in NY.  Alcove studios mean that there is a room off the main room.  The Waldorf Astoria lobby is not the best place to park bicycles.  One way street signs and stop lights are merely suggestions (especially on a bicycle).  A high waisted outfit does not flatter ANY female's body type and yet the trend persists here.  There is no "off night" in New York- it is always happening, everywhere.
