The Last and First Suppers

The word on the street is that a beach town called Punta Del Este is the San Tropez, the Hamptons, and Waikiki all rolled into one.  Without exception, every person we have talked to since we arrived in Montevideo has said, "You have to go to Punta Del Este!  It's the best!"  The same was said for New Year's Eve; apparently, Punta Del Este is the spot to be.  People travel from around the world to be a part of the scene on New Years Eve.  With all of this wonderful knowledge and our dislike for crowds, we decided to stay in downtown Montevideo and save our Punta Del Este trip for another time.

The result is that we rang in 2011 quietly.  Downtown Montevideo is pretty dead for New Year's eve.  Apparently EVERYONE goes to Punta Del Este.  We took a long walk through the "Old City" while we finished our Pisco from Peru.  We looked for a place to eat dinner but only found a couple of "superette" type stores open.  We settled on a strange, chocolate, peanute dulce de leche cookie/bisquit concoction; not the best compliment to Pisco and soda. . .
It is now the 4th of January and Kristina cannot bear to look at anything to do with dulce de leche!

Fortunately, our new year has been better.  Today, we moved into our new studio a block away from Pocitos beach.  Importantly, that means we were able to get groceries and cook our own meal.  We are BEYOND pleased since we have been eating from restaurants for nearly an entire month.  It was an absolute pleasure to purchase, prepare and consume pasta, tuna in water, fresh produce, and a merlot-like regional wine, Tannat.  Here is our first supper in our new apartment:
